Geraldton Universities Centre

Project: Construction of Geraldton Universities Centre. Proponent: Geraldton Universities Access Group (a former sub-committee of the Mid West Development Commission) and Geraldton Universities Centre

Description: The Geraldton Universities Centre (GUC) was established in 2002 and was formalised through the Geraldton Universities Centre Agreement in March 2004. There are five signatories to the Agreement:
  • Curtin University of Technology
  • University of Western Australia
  • Edith Cowan University
  • Central West TAFE
  • Geraldton University Access Group
The GUC is a jointly operated facility for the provision of higher education in Geraldton and is managed by the Geraldton Universities Centre Board with representation from each of the signatories to the Agreement, and the Chair appointed by the State Minister for Education.

Location: The facility is located on Onslow street in Geraldton, adjacent to Central West TAFE and the Geraldton Regional Hospital.

The Health Department donated part of the Geraldton Regional Hospital land for the GUC site. The GUC, the Health Department, Central West TAFE and the City of Geraldton-Greenough are working together to develop an Education & Health Precinct within the boundaries of the three sites.

Value: $3.5 M - The purpose built facility incorporates the administration centre, academic staff offices, lecture rooms, seminar rooms, computer laboratory, indigenous support centre, student amenities and courtyard.

Status: Funding for Stage 1 of GUC’s building project became available in 2004 and 2005. The design of Stage 1 included a campus plan which shows an integrated building program to address future growth of the Centre in line with the GUC Board’s strategic plan.

The new building was officially opened in February 2006. Enrolments have steadily increased from 56 students in 2004 to 190 students in 2007, with new degree programs and study options being introduced each year. The GUC aims to have 300 students by 2009.

Stage 2 of the facility is in design phase.

To provide additional assistance to our students, the Geraldton Universities Centre operates a scholarship program for those undertaking study at the GUC.
