Description: The Gascoyne Murchison Outback Pathways Project aims to provide an overall strategic marketing strategy to promote tourism in the outback region of the Gascoyne and Murchison areas. The pathways link regional centres and tourism product and provide regional centres with the opportunity to develop their local tourist attractions encouraging visitors to extend their stay in the region. Three major pathways have been identified: the Miners Pathway, Wool Wagon Pathway and Kingsford Smith Mail Run. The three pathways are designed as self drive trails that will encourage tourism infrastructure development, promotion and marketing of the region, increased levels of visitation and ultimately a stronger and more diverse economic base.
Status: The Gascoyne Murchison Outback Pathways were opened by Hon Tom Stephens on 17th of April 2004. Two openings were held to represent both the Gascoyne and Murchison Regions. Directional and interpretative signage has been manufactured and installed by 12 local governments covering approximately 3000km of roads. A total of forty two interpretative sites have been developed in Stage One and four of these sites were funded by the Shires of Carnarvon, Cue, Meekatharra and Yalgoo. Two promotional brochures have been developed to promote the three self drive trails and the Gascoyne Murchison Region.
Outback Pathways Stage Two: The pathways have been strengthened with an additional 23 interpretative sites. In addition a full colour guide book to the pathways was released mid 2006 which has been further enhanced by a three disk CD set featuring an oral history guide to the region.
