Better opportunities for local businesses

1 Aug 2017 6:04 PM - Dedicated resources in the Mid West

Mid West businesses will have a better chance of securing State Government contracts in their own backyard with the introduction of a dedicated local content officer to the Mid West Development Commission.

The move is the result of the recent announcement by the Minister for Regional Development Alannah MacTiernan that all regional development commissions would take the lead role in linking State Government contracts with local suppliers to create job opportunities in the regions.

Currently, regionally-based businesses represented less than 20% of total suppliers to government and received less than 6 per cent of the value of government contracts.

Mid West Development Commission Chief Executive Officer Gavin Treasure said the introduction of the role has provided the opportunity for the Commission to realign its resources.

“As a result of this opportunity, we have appointed Mr Mike Kendall to the position of local content officer for the Mid West,” Mr Treasure said.

“Mike has a wealth of experience in small business, agriculture and Government and is ideally placed to provide this conduit. Mike will also undergo specific training for his new role.  Training will focus on identifying opportunities for local supply to government agencies and ensuring businesses in the region were given the best shot at tendering for government projects,” he said.

The role will also report on how successful regional companies were in obtaining contracts.

The Minister said the new officers would ensure smaller companies were not disadvantaged in the tender process just because they did not have dedicated procurement staff. The Minister also noted that the initiative would make it possible for regional businesses to compete for government tenders so they can employ more local workers, helping to spur job and career opportunities.

Mr Treasure has also been appointed onto a Reference Group to provide advice on what other changes are required to ensure that the framework for effective State Government regional procurement and decision making is applied.

“It is vitally important that our local procurement officers are appropriately supported by a framework that improves opportunities for regional businesses. I look forward to applying our regional learnings around historic challenges with regional procurement, particularly in State Government, in an effort to establish a stronger and more robust structure to ensure our local content officers can be as effective as possible”, Mr Treasure said.
