Mid West Digital Economy Strategy 2026–2031

The Mid West Development Commission has released the Mid West Digital Economy Strategy 2026–2031, a regional roadmap to help communities, businesses and industries embrace digital technologies and skills.

The Strategy sets a shared vision for a diverse digital economy that drives jobs, innovation, prosperity and improved liveability across the Mid West.

It recognises that digital technology is no longer a future concept — it is already shaping how people access services, how businesses grow, how industries innovate and how communities stay connected.

Building a stronger digital future for the Mid West

The Mid West is home to strong industries, innovative businesses, globally significant infrastructure and diverse communities.

From agriculture, mining and critical minerals to renewable energy, space, tourism and small business, the region has significant opportunities to use digital technology to improve productivity, attract investment and create long-term value.

The Strategy provides a coordinated approach to growing the region’s digital economy by focusing on practical outcomes for people, businesses and communities.

It aims to support inclusive growth, strengthen digital skills, improve connectivity, encourage innovation and position the Mid West as a leader in digital economy investment.

What the Strategy focuses on

The Mid West Digital Economy Strategy is built around six strategic themes:

  1. Building our digital skills and workforce — increasing digital literacy, capability and local workforce pathways.
  2. Leveraging connectivity and infrastructure — improving access, reliability and use of digital infrastructure across the region.
  3. Promoting digital for business, industry and innovation — supporting businesses and industries to adopt technology and improve productivity.
  4. Fostering collaboration and investment — strengthening partnerships and promoting the Mid West as a digital economy destination.
  5. Delivering value to the community — ensuring digital investment improves access to services, cyber safety and community outcomes.
  6. Facilitating economic transformation and resilience — supporting emerging technologies, sustainability and innovation across key industries.

These themes will be supported by flagship initiatives including a Mobile Digital Skills Library, a Digital Collaboration Network, an Online Digital Resources Hub, a Mid West Digital Acceleration Program, cyber safety masterclasses and a Digital and Emerging Technology Showcase.

Developed with the region

The Strategy was informed by engagement with more than 400 stakeholders across the Mid West, including community members, businesses, industry, Aboriginal organisations, education providers, government agencies and digital sector representatives.

This engagement highlighted the importance of digital literacy, reliable infrastructure, affordability, access to services, collaboration and practical support for digital adoption.

Get involved

The digital economy is collaborative by nature. The Commission will work with all levels of government, industry, businesses, Aboriginal organisations, education providers, community groups and other partners to progress the Strategy and deliver outcomes for the region.

Whether you are a business exploring digital adoption, an investor interested in regional opportunities, a community organisation seeking support, or a partner with ideas for collaboration, there are opportunities to be involved.
